Once processes have been optimized the next logical stage is to gain an accurate understanding of the total amount of work within each store from all the activities and tasks that occur during normal business hours . This information when combined with other key data held in a comprehensive Operating Model provides the foundation on which to build an accurate picture of total Workload Demand, without this it is impossible to recruit and schedule the right staff.

Obtaining an accurate picture of total Workload Demand is divided into two logical areas. First, the use of labor standards which break down each process required to complete a single task or customer related activity into logical units of work to be carried out in a set time by a person with the appropriate skills. Second, an understanding of the total number of times these activities will be completed throughout a trading period by examining the volume and discrete drivers of this workload throughout the day with systems such as POS.
